India’s First Luxury Train
The Palace on Wheels, launched in 1982, is India’s first luxury train, a joint initiative of the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways. The train recreates the grandeur of the carriages once used by kings and nobles. Each of the 14 saloon coaches is named after former princely states—Alwar, Bharatpur, Bikaner, Bundi, Dholpur, Jaisalmer, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, and others—and matches the aesthetics and interiors of the royal past.
A Royal Experience on Board
The Palace on Wheels features 39 Deluxe Cabins and 2 Super Deluxe Cabins, accommodating up to 82 passengers. The interiors are adorned with lavish woodwork, intricate motifs, and plush furnishings inspired by Rajasthani heritage, creating a royal atmosphere throughout the coaches.
Two fine-dining restaurants, The Maharaja and The Maharani, serve exquisite Indian, Continental, Italian, and Mughlai delicacies.
The Taj Mahal at Sunrise
For the traveler from Istanbul, the highlight of this journey is often the sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra, offering a serene and magical experience away from the crowds.
